Artist Statement (2023)

Color moves under and over skin; it weaves and breaks. The iridescence of skin reflects the ground and layers of color glow and dim in tandem. Warmth and coolness fight for the attention of the skin; warm blue overtakes cool red, and where does that leave their forefront properties, cool and warm, to lie?

The figure, although extensively studied, is still a subject that will never be completely known. Evolution is creating anew while our studies are rushing to catch up with our always changing bodies. We are growing taller, our bones are thinner, and our lifespans are lengthening. Not to mention human interaction itself. Gesture can convey the smallest or largest thoughts, can give peace or bring war.

At the center point between two neverending studies, color and people, is where my work resides. I am trying to challenge my own perceptions and ambiguity about the body and human interaction in color. Every square inch of skin has a different perspective point. Light catches on the millions of facets that make up the body. Color is competing with light by giving hundreds of hues on one hand. Light and color on the body create an overwhelming amount of visual information, and all I am attempting to do is play with it; all while studying how people communicate through their bodies, and how color and light affect the nuances of an unspoken conversation. Body language is a subtle art in its own right and one that greatly affects our perception of others. Communication captured in one moment given a longer life in color due to my translations into paint.

Maybe nothing will ever make sense when it comes to these subjects, but asking myself all the questions that begin with “what if…” has given me a place to start and continue.
